184th Annual Convention

The 184th Annual Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago will be held on Saturday, November 20, 2021 as a virtual gathering on Zoom between 9 am and 3 pm.  Convention is the annual business meeting of the diocese, during which we elect leaders, consider resolutions and hear reports from across the diocese and the wider church. All are welcome to participate and there is no cost to register.

Voting participants at convention include the clergy of the diocese and lay delegates elected from each congregation. All voting will be conducted electronically. General attendees and visitors are invited to observe the proceedings online or to listen by phone.

Convention Registration

All convention participants are required to register individually, including canonically resident clergy, lay delegates, licensed clergy, youth delegates and general attendees. Please register online in English or Spanish by October 15.

Certification of Delegates

Delegates must be certified by their congregations or campus ministries in order to have voice and vote at convention, using the forms below:

Resolutions, Nominations and Reports Due September 30

Resolutions to be considered at convention must be received by September 30 and must follow a prescribed format. Download the guidelines for submitting resolutions in English and Spanish.

At convention, members of the Standing Committee, the Bishop and Trustees, and the Cathedral Chapter will be elected. Nomination forms are available in English and Spanish. Nominations are due by September 30.

Governing bodies, committees and commissions of the diocese are required to submit a report of the previous year’s activities. Reports are due to the secretary of convention by September 30.

Technology Requirements and Training

All 2021 convention business and voting will be conducted electronically, requiring a smart phone, tablet or computer with an internet connection. To participate via Zoom your device must meet these system requirements.

All clergy and lay delegates who are new to this process are required to participate in a virtual training in advance of convention and all are welcome to review the training. Training dates will be announced via diocesan e-news.

General attendees have the option to listen via phone or watch the livestream on the diocesan YouTube channel. Phone and YouTube participation do not permit voice or vote. Contact Karin Gutierrez with questions about online participation and technology requirements

Convention Memorials Due October 30

As is our tradition, we will remember those who have died in the last year in the convention necrology. Please submit the names of those in your congregation who have died since the 2020 Diocesan Convention to the Secretary of Convention by October 30. If you have questions about the memorial list please email Karin Gutierrez.
