The Sanctuary Task Force has established an Asylum Seekers Emergency Fund for those who would like to help meet the immediate needs of the newest Chicagoans and help put them on a path to independence. The diocese got the fund off to a good start by donating the collection proceeds from the Eucharist at the November 2023 convention.

All donations make a difference. For example

  • $50 – $100 purchases up to 300 diapers
  • $100 – $300 pays for utilities for 1 to 2 months
  • $300 provides emergency housing for 2 to 3 nights
  • $500 helps to cover some legal fees
  • $1,500 assists with rent for a 1 to 2 bedroom apartment for 1 month

Gifts may be made online.

Introduction

In 2019, the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago’s convention approved Resolution F-182, “On Becoming a Sanctuary Diocese.”

The resolution states, “As people of faith and conscience, we pledge to resist the stated policy proposals of the current presidential administration to target and deport millions of undocumented immigrants, and to eliminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that has granted temporary relief for thousands of young people in our communities.”

The convention encourages congregations and institutions of the Diocese of Chicago to consider becoming sanctuary congregations and institutions in order to:

  • serve as places of welcome, refuge and healing
  • provide other forms of material and pastoral support for those targeted by hate due to immigration status or some perceived status of difference
  • work alongside friends, families and neighbors to ensure the dignity and human rights of all people.

The Sanctuary Task Force, created by convention, connects with other local and national sanctuary communities and institutions, immigrant rights groups and coalitions, and engages in educating, organizing, advocacy and direct action to ensure the safety and security of the undocumented community. The task force assists in equipping congregations, clergy and lay leaders to engage in this work based on their local contexts, capacity, and discernment and implementing the work called for by the resolution.
