Clergy spouses are invited to register for the 2020 spouse retreat on March 6-8 at Loyola Retreat and Ecology Campus in Woodstock, Illinois. The theme is “Postmodern Clergy Spouses: Not Your Grandpa’s ‘Preacher’s Wife’.”
The cost for lodging and meals is $250 and scholarships are available. Register online and contact Jen Boyle-Tucker for scholarship information.
About the theme and presenters:
In 2020, marriage to an ordained person can look a lot of different ways. Women’s ordination, same-sex marriage, interfaith or secular spouses, and two-career households are here to stay — but the cultural assumptions from an earlier era can linger in odd ways. Today’s clergy spouses are unlikely to be providing full-time, unpaid labor to their partner’s employee. Still, some distinctive challenges and gifts remain.
Come and join us for a weekend of fellowship, rest, renewal, and conversation about our varied experiences in the new clergy household; what it means now to be a clergy spouse; and how can we support each other.
Laura Waters Jackson, MDiv, MA-C, has been a cultural anthropologist, hospital chaplain, psychotherapist, and community mental health educator. She has been a clergy spouse since 2006. Laura is married to the Rev. Micah Jackson, president of Bexley Seabury.
Lisa Rogers Lee, Bishop Lee’s spouse, is a professional singer and voice teacher. In her work she uses Alexander technique principles that include mindfulness practice and self care in daily living. Lisa will lead us in Circle Singing, Toning and Mindfulness exercises designed for everyone — even those who say they can’t sing! (Singing is always optional and listening is welcome.)
