The Coming
And God held in his hand

Dear People of God in the Diocese of Chicago,
This is one of my favorite poems by the Welsh poet, R.S. Thomas. It might seem like a peculiar choice for a Christmas greeting, but I believe it tells the truth at the heart of what Christmas is for. We celebrate the incomprehensible love that caused God to enter the broken, beautiful, mess and muddle of human existence. In Jesus, God became human. God inhabits humanity and so there is no heartache, no pain, no fear, no agony that God does not know about — from the inside. And because it is God with us, there is no human suffering that cannot, will not be redeemed and turned into unspeakable joy.
It has been my joy to serve with you as your bishop. And I hope that in some small way, I have pointed faithfully to the proclamation that the Word became flesh. With your new bishop, Paula, I pray that the proclamation will go on in this diocese, that we will continue to live on the basis of our trust in the One whose life and death and resurrection sets us free. Free to serve the world in his name. Free to be the Body of Christ.
As we prepare to welcome Bishop Paula, I commend you to the care and leadership already in place among us. The members of the Standing Committee will exercise oversight of the diocese as a whole, calling on our friends Bishop Doug Sparks and Bishop Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows as consulting bishops when they are needed. The Bishop’s executive team and staff will continue to serve the daily needs of our churches, with thanks to Courtney Reid, Crystal Plummer, and Andrea Mysen for their faithful leadership. I am particularly grateful that Andrea Mysen has agreed to serve as head of staff during the time we prepare to ordain the Thirteenth Bishop of Chicago, an event I am looking forward to with joy.
So I wish you a holy Christmas. Christ is born for us, in us, even in this time of pandemic, and there is nothing that can separate us from his love.

Estimado Pueblo de Dios en la Diócesis de Chicago,
Este es uno de mis poemas favoritos por el poeta galés, R.S. Thomas. Puede parecer una elección peculiar para un saludo Navideño, pero creo que dice la verdad al centro de para que sirve la Navidad. Celebramos el amor incomprensible que condujo a Dios a entrar en el roto, hermoso, desordenado y embrollo de la existencia humana. En Jesús, Dios se hizo humano. Dios habita la humanidad y entonces no hay ninguna tristeza, ningún dolor, ningún miedo, ninguna agonía de la que Dios no conoce — desde el interior. Y porque es Dios con nosotros, no hay ningún sufrimiento humano que no se puede, no será redimido y convertido en gozo indecible.
Ha sido mi placer servir con ustedes como su obispo. Y espero que de algún modo, aunque pequeño, yo haya señalado fielmente la proclamación que la Palabra se hizo carne. Con su nueva obispa, Paula, rezo que la proclamación continúe en esta diócesis, que sigamos viviendo en base de nuestra confianza en el Único cuya vida, muerte y resurrección nos libera. Libre para servir al mundo en su nombre. Libre para ser el Cuerpo de Cristo.
Mientras nos preparamos para dar la bienvenida a la Obispa Paula, les encomiendo al cuidado y liderazgo ya en curso entre nosotros. Los miembros del Comité Permanente supervisarán la diócesis en su conjunto, pidiendo a nuestros amigos el Obispo Doug Sparks y la Obispa Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows como obispos consultores cuando se les necesite. El equipo ejecutivo y el personal del Obispo seguirán sirviendo las necesidades diarias de nuestras iglesias con gracias a Courtney Reid, Crystal Plummer, y Andrea Mysen por su liderazgo fiel.
